Sialolithiasis in a Remnant Wharton’s Duct: a Case Study and Discussion

چکیده
Sialolithiasis is a common disorder affecting an estimated 12 in 1000 people each year and it accounts for more than fifty percent of the salivary gland diseases [1]. Although it can be found in children, it more commonly affects adults in their third to sixth decades [2]. There is a male predominance in sialoliths with some authors quoting that over 80% of the salivary calculi occur in the submandibular gland and less than 20% occurs in the parotid gland [3]. The sublingual and minor salivary glands are rarely affected. The great majority of the stones in the submandibular gland are located in the Wharton’s duct, with a ratio of 7:3 compared to intraglandular stones [4].

Multiple Submandibular Duct (Wharton’s Duct) Stones
Obstruction is a common problem of major salivary glands, and the most common cause is salivary calculi. The most frequent locations of sialolithiasis are submandibular gland and its duct; the vast majority of them are found in Wharton’s duct. Wharton’s duct stones are frequently single, and multiplicity is uncommon. Only about 5% of cases have more than two calculi. Based on the location and s...

Sialoliths are calcified concrements that develop in the parenchyma or ducts of the salivary glands and are among the most common causes of obstructive sialadenitis. The majority of sialoliths (84%) are located in the submandibular gland, particularly (90%) in the Wharton’s duct. 1 Sialoliths become symptomatic when they block salivary flow or cause an infection. Most patients present with swel...
